The kernel virtualization module is pretty nice. On my laptop it works much, much better then xen. It also doesn't play around with the host OS much at all ... just a module. Because of libvirt the virt-manager works with it in a similar fashion as it does with xen. If xen isn't working out for you on the desktop checkout kvm!
